Berkel Slicer U.S. Model B “Indianina” – Second Series
U.S. Berkel Slicer Model B (“Indianina”) – Second Series
The Berkel brand is a true benchmark for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage and professional slicers. The Berkel Model B is among the most sought-after Berkel slicers, both for its rarity and for the distinctive aesthetic appeal that sets it apart.
The U.S. Berkel Model B slicer, also known by the nickname “Indianina”, is one of the most fascinating and iconic machines produced at the American plant U.S. Slicing Machine in La Porte, Indiana, and later also in Toronto, Canada. Manufactured between 1918 and 1928, it is one of the most desirable models for collectors thanks to its compact size and elegant design. The Model B is considered one of the finest Berkel Flywheel Slicers, admired for its unique proportions and unmistakable vintage charm.

The Smallest Berkel Slicer Ever Made
The Berkel Model B is famous for being the smallest flywheel slicer ever built by the company. This is where the nickname “Indianina” comes from – over the years it has become a true symbol of style, taste and elegance.
Despite its compact dimensions, it fully embodies the build quality of historic Berkel machines, with a simple yet highly efficient mechanism, ideal for slicing small-sized and not overly aged products.
This slicer clearly shows why vintage Berkel machines are still considered genuine mechanical masterpieces, appreciated and collected all over the world.

Construction and Mechanical Details
The second series of the Model B features a set of technical solutions that make it truly unique:
Cylindrical sharpener
The sharpener consists of a mechanism enclosed in a cylindrical cover, similar to that of the larger Berkel 70 and 100 models, but in smaller dimensions.
Thickness regulator
The slice thickness is controlled by a small graduated dial, mounted directly on the base of the machine – a distinctive feature of this model.
Rack-and-pinion product clamp
The product clamp is made up of two opposing rack rods, connected by a toothed arm that firmly holds the product during slicing.
This structure is slotted and inserted above the sliding carriage.
Round shoulder and glass receiving tray
The machine features the classic round, closed shoulder typical of American models.
Mounted on the shoulder is the hub that supports the blade, and this is also where the product receiving tray is fixed, consisting of:
-
a vertical sheet of nickel-plated steel
-
a horizontal surface in white opaline glass, where the sliced product falls
